QuorumLabs BC/DR appliances target SMBs

By Dave Simpson

November 6, 2009 – Aimed at cost-conscious SMBs that need full business continuity (BC) and --disaster recovery (DR) functionality, yet don't have the IT expertise to configure and manage high-end BC/DR solutions, QuorumLabs this week released its onQ data protection appliances.

Echoing what has become a mantra among data protection vendors focusing on the lucrative SMB space, Cliff Hannel, QuorumLabs' vice president of marketing and business development, says "SMBs have the same data protection requirements as larger enterprises, but they need simplicity and lower cost."

The company's onQ business continuity appliances start at $20,000 a pair, or can be licensed on a monthly subscription model. The company claims "One-Click Recovery" (a phrase it has trademarked). The appliances continuously image protected systems and maintain virtual machine clones (virtual recovery nodes) of the systems on local and/or remote appliances. The devices provide replication at the server, storage or site level.

The onQ appliances can be configured with two to eight internal 1TB SATA drives, and can attach to any external storage devices that support iSCSI or NFS. Higher-end models include mirroring or RAID-5 protection.

After an initial full backup, the appliances perform "incremental forever" operations. File-level data deduplication takes place at the source, before the data is sent to the onQ appliances. QuorumLabs' software includes a policy-based engine that provides distributed monitoring and automation.

The technology behind the onQ appliances was originally developed by Themis Computer, and was used primarily in military applications. QuorumLabs was spun out of Themis about two-and-a-half years ago.

The company is initially targeting VARs and managed services providers, but eventually hopes to establish OEM relationships. Initial partners include resellers and services provides such as Emineo Group, Entec, Entisys, GTC Systems, it consultancy group, Nex-Tech and Restech Information Services.
