Akamai IP Acceleration Accelerator (IPA) to optimize the delivery of Application and Desktop Virtualization |
Akamai has been accelerating Web Based applications and content delivery since its founding in 1998. Services like iTunes Adobe, and Amazon utilize Akamai to deliver their content, and you may not have even known it. But I bet you didn’t know they can also accelerate your Application and Desktop Virtualization solutions?
Akamai’s IP Acceleration Accelerator (IPA) managed service accelerates your Application and Desktop Virtualization initiatives over the internet with no Capital expenditure, and no software changes. While WAN accelerators have recently began to address display protocols used by the Application and Desktop Virtualization solutions, they can do very little for users accessing your systems over the internet. Not enough data is repeated to the single user to leverage caching and that is where most WAN accelerators obtain their biggest savings. Akamai IPA managed service accelerates the display protocol by leveraging the Akamai network to quickly deliver packets and provide a better user experience for end users. Since it doesn’t require a WAN, your users can realize these benefits from non-corporate locations. If you have users utilize Application and Desktop Virtualization display protocols from across the oceans, then you really need to see this.

Microsoft steps up its game with Hyper-V R2 |
Microsoft released Windows Server 2008R2 late last year and with it came Hyper-V R2. Microsoft focused on 3 areas for this release: Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, Scalability and Availability. Full article is linked here.
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Microsoft has provided the ability to make a Virtual Desktop available within a user’s object in Active Directory. Combined with Windows 7, users can leverage multiple monitors, Aero Glass, multimedia redirection and audio input/recording.
Scalability: The free version of Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 now supports up to 8 Processors and up to 1TB of memory. Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V (the ones you pay for) are now support up to 64 logical processors.
Availability: Live Migration is now supported on all editions along with the previously supported Quick Migrations. Live Migration Clustering is also now supported on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (Free).

Tech Corner: Akamai’s IP Application Acceleration Managed Service |
Think of Akamai’s IPA managed service like a freeway system. The internet is the standard freeway system, and Akamai’s IPA managed service is like a toll road.
- The toll road is purpose built for speed and moving traffic from one location to another.
- The toll road has entry points and exit points for the most common locations.
- While the freeway system can run efficiently at times, it does not provide assurance since a single accident can affect the entire freeway infrastructure.
Akamai’s IPA managed service is the toll road for IP based application by providing a network built for speed and efficiency with a level of assurance for traffic delivery.
First of all, the IPA managed service leverages Akamai’s network as its foundation. The user enters the Akamai network by working as normal. The user doesn’t change how they work at all. From an IT Administrator perspective, instead of the FQDN referencing your network directly, it references the Akamai network. The Akamai network responds by providing the user with the closest entry point to the Akamai network.
Once on the Akamai network, the data travels to your network utilizing the best path (and most often with much less hops) and is then delivered to your data center via the closest exit point from the Akamai network.
That’s it. No changes to your application. No additional network bandwidth. No hardware for you to purchase.
Sounds simple right? Sounds like it can speed up your Application and Desktop Virtualization display protocols?
